Cornell Admit Rate Drops to 18 Percent

Getting into Cornell has never been easy, but gaining admission to the incoming class of 2014 this year was harder than ever.
Cornell admitted 18 percent of a record 36,337 applicants, according to BusinessWeek.
Six of the other Ivies also had a significant increase in applications. Yale University, experienced a decline of 134 applications from 26,003 last year — a decline of less than one percent.

Cornell’s acceptance rate has become increasingly selective over the past 10 years. Last year, 19 percent of applicants were admitted last year, compared with 33 percent 11 years ago. Applicants for the incoming Class of 2014 will receive their online decision notifications Thursday at 5 p.m.
Applications are surging in general because colleges are marketing themselves more vigorously, John Reider, director of college counseling at San Francisco University High School, told BusinessWeek. The more difficult they are to get into, the more students apply to multiple schools and thereby increase competition for slots.
