Cornell accepts 1325 early decision applicants for class of 2018

With 1,325 students out of 4,775 early decision applicants accepted Monday night, the Class of 2018 is already taking shape, University Spokesperson John Carberry says.

The number of applications for the Class of 2018 represented a 13.6 percent increase from the Class of 2017, for which Cornell received 4,204 early decision applications, according to Carberry.

The early decision admission rate for the Class of 2018 was 27.7 percent, down from 29.7 percent for the Class of 2017.

Each of Cornell’s undergraduate colleges and schools experienced increases in early decision applications. According to Carberry, Cornell’s early decision pool has increased by 75 percent over the past decade.

Students who were accepted early said they were ecstatic to receive the news.

“Being accepted was honestly the most surreal feeling in the world,” Carly Joos ’18 said. “It is so relieving knowing that I will be attending such an incredible school next year and that I have about eight months to get myself ready.”

Greg Stepaniouk ’18 said his anxiety was “through the roof” before he heard back. Later, he said, it became the happiest day of his life.

“Opening the decision was like nothing I’ve ever experienced. … I can honestly say that getting into Cornell was the first time I’ve ever cried tears of joy,” Stepaniouk said.

Dylan McDevitt ’18 echoed Stepaniouk’s sentiment, saying, “It’s been a lifelong dream for me to go to Cornell.”

Applicants were able to see their decisions at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. As of 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, 4,681 students had viewed their online decisions, according to Carberry.

Regular decision candidates for the Class of 2018 will be notified in late March.

The University had already announced that it would be extending the regular decision deadline by a week to January 9 to accommodate challenges with the new Common Application and to allow applicants to use the Universal College Application, The Sun previously reported.
